Election Season Disclaimer for Neighborhood Association Meetings

Attached again is a disclaimer you can read at all your neighborhood association meetings to help ensure impartiality during this important season. As a general rule, if you are giving floor time to one candidate, you should be giving floor time to all candidates. If a candidate shows up to your neighborhood association meeting and discusses their candidacy either verbally (or leaves their PAC logo on with their camera off on Zoom), this can be an issue. The District Coalitions are working with the Elections Division to ensure candidates have proper training to help make this season easier on everyone to navigate, but we must do our part too. Please reach out anytime if you have a question on what is appropriate behavior or not in neighborhood association meetings.

Phishing Attempts on the Rise

Multiple officers of a Portland neighborhood association received targeted emails impersonating the association chair and requesting help with an organizational expense. The messages used officers’ real names and roles, and one progressed to a $450 Zelle payment request. A similar impersonation attempt occurred last year.

The current messages came from org.boardpresident@gmail.com, but be alert for similar addresses impersonating your association’s officers. Independently verify unexpected payment requests using a known contact method, even when an email contains accurate information about your association or its officers.

If you receive a similar message:

  1. Do not send money or click links.
  2. Report the message as phishing in your email service.
  3. Report the attempted fraud to the FTC at ReportFraud.ftc.gov.
  4. Forward the message to Klint Finley at klintfinley@gmail.com for a student cyber threat intelligence research project examining whether other Portland neighborhood associations are being targeted.

Thank you for all you do in the community.
